I went to an interview yesterday, my first one after many months of job-hunting. The pickings are slim for new grads in my area. The interview went well and from what was said I believe I will be offered a position working every other weekend at a long-term care facility. This is not the ideal starting point for me...I was hoping to get into a hospital somewhere. On a med-surg unit would have been great! However I need a job and am somewhat interested in geriatric medicine. Will taking the LTC job hinder me in being able to transition to a hospital job later on? It would be nice not to be considered a "new grad" anymore, but I am not sure whether working in a LTC facility would be a good idea if ultimately I want to work in a hospital environment. Would working in a LTC facility count as the magical "1 year experience" required to get many nursing jobs?
I would appreciate your input, thank you.
