How many staff members would an adult inpatient unit generally have for 20 patients? Any security guards on your unit?

Are any of the patients on observation status or in leather restraints? If not then 1RN & as few as 2NA's maybe 3 if we are lucky. No security gaurds on the unit.

1:6 ratio where I work...4 RNs/RPNs for 24 patients. LPN or NA on shift to assist in ADLs for the psychogeriatric patients.

security guards are a page away, usually arrive within a few min

Depends on the milieu. We are med/psych. If no medical patients, no 1:1, no heavy adl's and if it's a weekend, they could staff with 5 on days/pms, 3 on nights.

On our inpatient psych unit it is 1:7 :)

Day and evening shifts, staff to patient ratio is about 1 to 3. This would be with two to three RN's per unit on days and evenings and one RN per unit on 11 to 7 shift. Units are about 24 beds mostly private rooms. Mental Health workers make up the rest of the nursing staff. Nights the ratio drops to as low as 1 to 8, but allowences are made for CO's.

Security guards are not considered patient care personel. They are employed only on nights and evenings and are mostly responsible for the safety of the grounds, buildings, employee vehicles etc, from external threat.
