STA 21 Navy Nurses Corp

Hello everyone. I have been in the military going on two years now, and I would like to say I am doing well. My Chief has encouraged me into looking into STA-21. My dream has always been to become a pediatric nurse practitioner ultimately. I have a good sense of understanding in what the Nurses Corp is, however I would like to get some information from someone who has actually gone through the STA-21 program from enlisted. I have a few questions.

Whenever you applied to STA-21 how exactly does that work? If you get accepted do you choose the school of your choice at that time or are you supposed to be applying to colleges ahead of time? I am hoping I'm not too late to apply for July of 14.

Do you get to choose a specialty or is given to you?

How is your career going so far and how do you like it?

What are my chance of getting into pediatrics?

I had so many questions prior to starting this post, but now too much is coming. I will probably have more questions later, but this is it for all.

Are you asking to use STA-21 for a graduate degree or undergraduate? That would clear up a lot of the answers you seek. I had a friend do STA-21 a few years ago.

My understanding is that STA-21 is only for first-degree bachelors. Do you have a BSN?

"Individuals who have already obtained their baccalaureate degree are not eligible for STA-21 and should apply directly for Officer Candidate School (OCS). OCS application procedures can be found in OPNAVINST 1420.1B (Chapter 4)."

I got this from the sta21 navy site.

If you only have an associates, I'd say go for it! My friend thinks that it is a great program. You'll still get your regular pay and surround yourself with Navy and Marine personnel in NROTC.
