As a Georgia nurse hoping to move to the Duluth area by next summer, I have noted the discussions related to unions and the types of jobs in the Minnesota area. I have family in Saginaw and also own property in the area. All of my nursing experience has been in the south and without the benefit of union representation. Primarily my field has been rehabilitation nursing and I guess that I will continue in that type of nursing.
I would like to have any additional input into the above discussion especially the possibility of working within the St. Mary's/Duluth clinic system. I have been somewhat discouraged by the working conditions of a staff nurse without union representation, but am not sure that a union is the answer to all problems as a nurse. Input form someone working within this system or currently employed would be extremely helpful. I am currently looking at hospital/clinic work to keep benefits such as health insurance and retirement.

I may be several months too late to respond but thought I would anyway. I have worked at SMDC for a year and can't compare it to anywhere else but I feel it has good benefits and union representation. They are always hiring. I recently saw a rehab nurse opening at Miller-Dwan Hospital. Miller is Owned by SMDC (St. Mary's-Duluth Clinic) and the nurse unions are in the process of merging. Current and former employees talk about what a great place it is to work at and they refer to St. Mary's as the "big house". By the way did you know it was -20 F here 4 days ago. Georgia is much more compatible with life this time of year.
