SPC Nursing Students - Question!

Just from my past experience - I applied for the 3rd time for fall session - first round letters go out around the end of March, beginning of April. You will probably get a letter stating that you're in the second pool simply because you haven't finished your pre-reqs. Second pool letters come out late May. Good luck!!

It doesn't hurt to call SPC's nursing office or stop by just to check your status and to see if they even received it. I was told to hand delivered my application to SPC so you know it got there personally. GOOD LUCK!

Hello everyone,

I am new here and I applied for Nursing program at SPC, planning to start taking come pre-classes this Fall but was shocked when my advisor told me that I need to have at least 3.6 GPA in order to be accepted in the program and she said that this year the avg GPA is 3.8. I earned BA from USF and MBA from NSU in 1993 and 2002 respectively so it has been a while since I was in school. I am currently working full time at a good company that paid me well for 12 years and I couldn't see advancement here. Originally, I was applied for Nursing school at SPC 2 years ago but since my mother passed away 2 months after I planning to take pre-classes then my plan had changed until recently. When I was a caregiver for my mother I really wanted to be a nurse because I know I can take better care of her but after she passed, I got really depressed and didn't continue with my original plan. I would like to ask some advice below. really appreciated the input especially from people who are taking classes right now or already graduated from Nursing School.

1) Is it possible for me to attend the nursing school part-time? My husband is not happy if I have to quit my job to attend school full time. If it's possible to go to school part-time then how long does it take? I think after 8 pre-classes then I will only have 72 credits left to take to complete the RN program.

2) Do you know if they are usually offerring evening classes for Nursing program?

3) Has anyone come across any problems while studying nursing at SPC?

4) Does anyone see a big gap in age group, or what is the oldest student that taking classes? I am 44

snow, I can answer some of your questions as I'm currently in the SPC nursing program.

1-2) No, there is not a part-time option. There is an evening program but it is still a full tiem program and classes begin at 1pm and 3pm so it's tough to work a 9-5 type of job. HCC is the only part-time program I'm aware of. Going full time the program takes four semesters (once all pre-reqs are done)

3) I'm not sure what you mean by "problems." I did a lot of research before starting at SPC (this is a second career for me as well, BS from FSU '96) and each program has it's "quirks" but SPC is pretty good.

4) Nursing program is pretty diverse, with regards to age my class ranges from 20-late 50's, granted most are in their early 20's. Each section has 36 students and last semester at least 20% of us were in our mid 30's or older. True most of the class is 20-something but don't let your age hold you back if it's something you want to do.

They won't look at your CUM GPA from youre previous degress. GPA is calculated using pre-regs and support classes only. There is a tool on the HEC website.
