Southwest TN Comm College Fall 2010 Hopefuls

Published

I was wondering if there are any of you that have gotten that call yet to get in to Southwest for the fall 2010. I just got mine yesterday! I am so happy and excited! I have been waiting a long time for this and it has finally come! I had some questions for those of you in the class already. I have heard a lot of horrible things about foundations. What is the class all about? Where do you do your clinicals? Are the times really from 630 to 330? How much do the lab kits cost. Any info would be great. I am trying to plan out my budget, and look for a babysitter b/c there are no daycares open at 530!

Thanks!:D

Congrats and good luck!!

I'm trying to get into the spring 2011 program, do you mind if I ask how did you do with your pre-requisite grades and your NLN?

I've heard the same about foundations, so I will be interested in what those that have taken it have to say too.

Hey! I scored a 108 on the NLN and I got a B in A&P I, II and Micro. You also have to be eligible to take statistics and English I. I was so surprised that I got selected because I didn't do to well on the NLN, but my GPA was a 3.52 overall. I get all the info on Friday, so hopefully I will find out more about the program then! Good luck for the spring semester.

I'm in Foundations now. I like it. I know a lot of people say things about the instructor, but I haven't had a problem. Yes, she's hard. Yes, she's no nonsense. Yes, you have to follow directions to a T. This is nursing, you're learning to save lives, it's important. I made A's in all my classes, got a 159 on NLN and I'm making a B in Foundations. It's hard, really hard. It's nothing like A&P or Micro. You learn a tremendous amount of information in a short amount of time, and they have to apply it.

The clinicals are 8 hours, so 6:30 am to 3:30 pm is correct. Clinicals the first semseter are at The Med, Methodist Germantown or Methodist South. It just depends on which instructor you get and you won't know that until the first day of class.

Books first semester were about $680. Plus I ended up buying about another $120 in care plan books and NCLEX review books.

Thanks so much for all the information! Are there any books that I can buy now that can help me during the semester? Was the $600 on just the nursing books? How are the nurses at the hospitals that you are working at?

thanks,

The $600+ was for the required books, but you'll use them all 4 semesters. There will be just a few you have to buy in the other semesters, so nothing like the first one.

You'll also have to have $75 for a useless skills bag that is required. The uniform is about $100 for one shirt, one pants and one jacket - all required. And you have to have all white shoes, not one single tiny bit of color on them at all. My shoes were about $65.

I like the hospital I'm working for clinicals. My instructor is great and has the ER call us for any procedures they have that we can do like catheters and NG tubes. I think all of my class has had a chance to do a catheter and I don't think many of the other groups have had that opportunity yet. As far as the nurses I've worked with on the floor, 95% are helpful, but there's always one that thinks you're in their way. You just have to not let it bother you.

Thanks Scifihippie. I can tell that you are really taking this seriously and I appreciate all the advice and tips! I pm'd you to ask about the books

Thanks
