South Dakota State University ABSN Fall 2024???

Published

Please help. I'm having trouble deciding what school to choose. Has anyone recently attended the ABSN Sioux Falls program or know how well the program is ran? Nursing school is already tough as it is so I want to choose a well organized program.

What are the pros and cons of their program?

Are professors good at teaching the material or do students find the quality of teaching subpar?

Is the program organized?

Anything else I should know beforehand?

As someone who attended South Dakota State University (SDSU) for my Master's in Nursing, I encourage you to consider other programs. Their reputation is a land-grant university which consistently cranks out a large volume of nurses. However, their disorganization is well known whether it is through a typical baccalaureate, accelerated, master's, or doctoral program. A large amount of educator turnover occurs throughout the fall and Spring.

You are going to be consuming astronomical amounts of material in order to complete an accelerated nursing degree which typically takes four years including prerequisite courses. The way the program is structured allows for no down time, no ability to work outside of school, and very little time to focus on yourself, family, or other pursuits. I taught courses for their program and it was a miserable experience.

What is your consideration for this type of program? There are plenty of other associate and baccalaureate programs which are not accelerated. Take time to thoroughly review nursing programs and speak with several people who are well-acquainted with graduates. Spend time and thoroughly research as this is one of the most important decisions you will make.

Yes, you can save some money by completing the program in a year but the emotional, mental, physical, and psychological stress is not worth the accelerated time frame. Beginning one's nursing career frazzled and burned out is not conducive to an enjoyable experience.
