Today I went for a run around the block and about 2km into a 5km run my lungs started to feel like i had sharp stabbing pains in both my lungs on inhalation and exhalation. I have gone for very similar runs (occasionally change the scenery to keep it interesting) nearly every day for the past 5 years and this has only started yesterday. It actually felt like burning and when i got home i nearly passed out on my bed. I am pretty sure that it was not asthma as i had no trouble getting air in and I don't think I have a chest infection. I do not and never have smoked and although it was about 10degrees C outside I don't think that should have contributed to it. I consider myself very fit and the fact that I always go for runs and play indoor soccer stumps me. Since it has happened twice now I am a bit scared of going for a run tomorrow. After about 10 minutes lying down I feel on top of the world again (the feel good post excerise feeling has taken over) and my lungs are just slightly tender. I asked a few friends and my brother if this has happened to them and so far everyone says NO. So my question is -
Has this happened to you, OR do you have any idea's what it could be?
I thought of going to the Dr's but by the time i would get there I feel better.
Thank you in advance. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

NurseRatchy....I don't have much to add..other than maybe make a doctor's appt just in case. I know when I am working out in really cold (winter) weather...my lungs do burn. Once I get inside a warm environment...the burning stops...but, I never had stabbing pains. As you said, you never smoked & in excellent shape.

Yes. I was thinking about extreem cold as well. I understand aerobic exercise done when air is too cold you could damage lung tissue and in any case aerobic exercise in the extreem cold can cause a burning senstion in the lungs.
That said, it is not cold weather now. Unless you are an Aussi?
Was there smoke or some other irritant in the air?
I just don't have any other ideas on this.
Oh my I did not catch the part about 10 degrees C. It is cold. That likely explains it. So you are an Aussi!
