Well, my dear friends that have supported me throughout the application process, I finally feel as though I have a chance. HCC makes a student take RNSG 1301 (Pharmacology) before they can start clinical rotations. I hear its a difficult class and one must past the math exam(s) with a 90%+ in order to move on. HCC has to invite you, one cannot just sign up for the class. Well, last year I was offered a spot; however, I declined in order to persue my BSN. (Duuuuuuuuh! Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.) Upon finding out I did not get into a BSN program, I emailed the school asking to be reconsidered. Here was the response I got.
Okay, I finally pulled your file. You can take pharmacology in the summer. Right now, classes have not been set, but will be by the end of the first week of May.
Please email me at that time so I can make sure you are registered. I should have the days/times then.
Once you successfully complete the course and pass the required math test (within course), you will then be eligible for the Fall entry.
I am going to think positive and live at my study desk all summer! Between you guys and the nurses I work with - I've been able to keep my chin up and I want to thank you very much for your help. My mother is very sick with breast cancer, so this whole process has been very emotional for me - so I apologize for sounding so whiney - I'm really not like that. I just really want her to live long enough to see me graduate. I wuv you guys! :redbeathe :redbeathe :loveya: :heartbeat :heartbeat

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :balloons:
That is fabulous news, and I know that you will do great this summer.
Sending prayers for your mom - I just walked in the Tarrant County Race for The Cure last weekend and there are some awesome stories of hope.

Thanks. I work with oncology patients and love it. They are a very special group of people. My mother was dx in 2001 and told she's be lucky to be here in a year. She went to a satellite campus of MD Anderson and is still hanging in there. Thanks for your support.
I'm sure that must be really difficult for you to deal with. Working in the field you know what to expect for better or for worse.
So you should get your schedule pretty soon then right? How exciting! I'm sure that there are lots of schools in your area that do the bridge from ADN to BSN. Anything to get you started right?
That's right! As for oncology, most people (usually not nurses) look at me and can't believe I want to work with that population; however, they don't see the miracles I see every day. Also, who needs me more than the "underdog" right? I've gotten far more from the patients than I could ever give. Thanks for your input.
I have two very good friends (husband and wife) wo are radiation therapists and they certainly tell the same story.

Im so happy for you!!...I wish I would have been more clear about what you were saying about HCC and the pharmacology class. I thought you understood that once you were offered a spot in the class you pretty much are on ur way to gettin into the program-the class isnt offered to everone. I thought that you just made the decision to pursue the BSN instead. Like you said, hind sight is 20/20. I heard the class is hard but those with a strong math background do pretty well (Ive talkd to a few people at the HCC campus while takin pre-reqs there). I know you'll knock 'em dead. You'll do great. You have such great motivation and spirit:)...Good luck. And best wishes to your mom-Im sorry to hear that.
Thanks ree-nee. I didn't really know what to think because the HCC-ADN web site states that taking the prereqs "doesn't guarantee" admission. Also, when the email states "eligible for fall admission" - I wonder if that is 2006 or 2007? Hmmmm, I'll have to do more reading, but I'll take either year! LOL:monkeydance:

Congratulations Aussie!! That's fantastic news, and I'm sure you'll do great in the summer pharm class. If you put your mind to it, there's really nothing you can't accomplish. Keep us posted on your progress over the summer.; I'm dying to hear about how the pharm class is....it's been so villified by all of the nurses I know.
Hello JC,
Are you referring to pharm in general, or specifically HCC's class? I've never heard anything positive about the class either! It will be tough since the summer course is condensed; however, it will be the only class I'm taking, so I continue to be positive. I've purchased Nursing Pharmacology for Dummies and am boning up on some terms, etc. I will also be shortening my work week in order to fit in more studying. Talk to ya later!
well, i have heard that hcc's pharm was a "weed out" class, but i imagine pharm is pharm, and that it will be difficult wherever you go. i'm sure you'll do well though. be sure to make good use of all of your resources (there are some cool drug cards on the pre-nursing forums)!
