So nervous

Specialties Med-Surg

I'm a relatively new nurse. Only had my license a little over a year. Working at a SNF for my first job. I've gotten used to the routine and can do my job in my sleep. But in a few weeks, I'll be starting a new position at the local hospital on the med/surg oncology floor. I'm so freaked out. While working at the SNF, I haven't had to use hardly any of the clinical skills I learned in school. I haven't even attempted an IV stick. I'm afraid that I'm going to be in over my head at the hospital. But I want to do well at this role so bad. I'm afraid I'm not a good enough nurse to work in a fast paced environment like a hospital.

You will go through orientation and learn the skills necessary for the job.

With more reps, you will master them. By the time you master them, you will probably be looking for a more challenging job because the med-surg job has become boring.

Specializes in Med-Surg.

Don't worry! You'll have an orientation period. Ask lots if questions, and believe me the opportunities will come to practice those skills. You probably already have some great time management skills. Those will serve you well in acute care. Hopefully your floor is like mine, it really is a team environment, we are all there to care for the pts. And we help each other out as we need it. There's always someone who is an expert at ivs or ngs or whatever skill is needed. Learn from them! One day at a time , and a good attitude will get you through!
