So Darn Frustrated

Published

I have a BS degree in Business/HR Management and don't like it at all. Been at stay at home mom for the last 4 years and want to get my advanced degree in nursing. I am not from California and after 2 years of searching for a program, I still can't find one that will get me in and out. Most programs are very costly and it takes years (it seems) ot get into a program because they are so impacted. I really liekd Sonoma State DEMSN program but the next cohort starts Jan 2012. I was thinking of going back to Pennsylvania (where I am from) and completing a nursing degree there but my husband has a great job here and I have a 4 year old. I am just so down about this. Anyone else going thru something similiar?

Even other health profressions are hard to get into.

I like you also have a BA in another field. You're correct education is very expensive. This is what worked for me, I did my LVN (no jobs BTW) and now I'm applying to the LVN-ADN program, it's cheaper because if I go for a 2nd Bachelors degree I wont get any financial aid, it will be just student loans. Then once I'm finished with my ADN then I will do the RN-MSN because I can apply for financial because it's not a BSN, it's a MSN. Nothing is quick, and if something is quick I would stay away from that program. Nothing is get in and get out unless you do an ABSN which for Samuel Merrit it's about $50K maybe even more, but the program is only 14 months in length. Nursing is very intense so you want to make sure you choose a program that's reputable. If you think you might go the ABSN route then you may want to keep in mind that if you ever go abroad that ABSN may not be accepted. You also have the option of doing LVN-BSN though Indiana State University if you do the LVN first. It all depends on what your needs are and what you're really looking for in a program. I hope this helps, and good luck

Hi,

Thanks for responding back to me. I honestly don't want to take the long road but it might have to be that way. I live in the Sacramento area and I thought of doing the LVN. Which schools/rop are there in the Sacramento area? Where are you in your education? The cost of a education is so very much. Also, I have a 4 year old. How long has it takeyou thus far? Would I get a job as a LVN while I continue my education?

I don't know how the job market is for LVN's in the Sacramento area. Do a search for LVN's and see how many LVN new grad positions are out there. Most likely there wont be any in the hospitals but there may be in the nursing home or other areas. I think there may be some LVN-RN programs there but I can't remember the schools. Do a search on bvnpt.gov and the CA BRN website for a list of schools.

I'm almost finished, I have to be admitted into the LVN-RN portion of a nursing program. I started about 3 years ago with prerequisites and also finished the LVN program back in February. I'm still jobless as a LVN and that's frustrating as heck, but what can I do except apply for LVN-RN programs.

You can work while you're in the program as I did because I had no choice, others in my program had husbands or parents to support them and they didn't have to work. It's a struggle but it can be done.
