Smartest way to be NP in Ohio??

Hello,

I posted this thread on here b/c I wanted to hear from actual NP's. (Not people from admissions, financial, etc.)

I'm 44 and want to be an FNP. I have a B.A. not in nursing. I'm in a Generic MSN program that does not prepare us to be an NP. Is it true that I'll have a hard time getting into a Post-Master's program without a BSN? My MSN degree is actually an "advanced generalist" (advanced bsn) degree, but they call it an MSN on paper. I don't understand that at all.

The accelerated BSN programs are not for me and my family, but I'm still considering it. Am I crazy to consider a traditional BSN, then do an online MSN/NP program? I'll be 48 when I get my BSN. I'm too poor to retire, ever.

I'm not a RN yet but I'm doing a program similar to yours an Accelerated MSN. Its considered an advanced generalist degree because its a pre-licensure with a mix of masters level courses to fulfill the masters component. From doing my own research (talking to students with this degree) most hiring managers like the MSN degree and since you will have this degree getting a BSN becomes completely unnecessary, infact if becoming a NP is your main goal having this degree will help you reach this goal a lot faster. NP programs are only exclusively offered at the masters or doctorate level and since you will already have a MSN (when you apply) this will cut out a lot of extra coursework because you would have fulfilled them within your MSN degree and you can strictly focus on the NP portion. With this degree You have the option of completing a "post masters certificate" or DNP (Doctorate) to become a NP. This is the exact reason I'm choosing this route aswell, because it will help me become a NP a lot faster vs the BSN route were you will have to obtain a MSN alongside your NP certification unless you choose to strictly pursue it at the Doctorate level.
