Shadow experiences

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

Hi all,

I have been and ICU nurse for 14 years and will be completing my BSN this April.I have always wanted to shadow a CRNA in the OR but have felt it is pointless without my BSN.I am prepating to shadow as part of a project for my BSN. I have wanted to be a CRNA for a long time. I have searched past posts on this subject. Will you guys that have shadowed please share your experiences? Did you feel welcome? What types of questions did you ask? How did the experience make you feel? How many times did you shadow? What did you learn? Were the hospitals receptive to you shadowing? Any tips or experiences would greatly be appreciated. Please reply.

Thank You

Before I began shodowing, I was fortunate to meet a nurse who was a really good friend of an anesthesiologist at a private hospital. This turned out to be the perfect setup because I can come and go as I please and watch anything I can get my eyes on while I'm there.

I think the most important thing that you need to do is introduce yourself to the CRNAs and the MDs. Tell them who you are and your plans. Most of the CRNAs and the MDs I've done this with have been very receptive towards me and will do their best to teach before procedures and as they go.

By introducing yourself, you will start networking and making a name for yourself. From what I have learned, successful careers begin with a strong network of connections. You never know who you are going to run into and how they may help you accomplish your future goals.

Be sure to ask questions when they ask if you have any questions. One of the ways I have gone about doing this is carrying a small notebook around with me. That way when I hear or see something that conflincts with what I have previously written down, need clarification on, or just want a more in-depth knowledge I can ask the CRNA/MD.

All in all I have enjoyed my shadowing experiences thus far. There are times when I feel it's a little slow; but I have gotten so much out of just observing. One of the best things is that I can actually see myself doing anesthesia some day which, in turn, gives me the desire to press on and jump through the neccessary hoops to get into and through anesthesia school. Good luck in your endeavors!

Thank you so much for your kind and helpful reply. Good advice I will use. Have you applied yet? I still have to retake sciences because it has been 20 years for me--I just do not think I am that old!

Come on everyone please share your experiences and what you have learned. Anything you would have done differently?I will post my experience after I have one hopefully in March.

Thank-You
