Seeking Advice on Nursing School Applications

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in a challenging situation and hoping to get some advice from people who have been through similar experiences or who can offer guidance.

I originally attended UMass Boston and, unfortunately, my GPA ended up being low (around a 2.2). I wasn't prepared for the rigorous environment and found myself struggling in my pre-med major. Since then, I've made a conscious decision to pursue nursing. I transferred to a community college where I completed all my nursing prerequisites and earned a 3.7 GPA.

Now, I'm applying to multiple nursing programs, including re-enrollment to UMass Boston's program, as well as three other schools. One of them requires me to take the TEAS exam, which I haven't done yet, but I plan to study hard for it. My concern is that my previous GPA from UMass Boston might hold me back, and I'm unsure how to stand out with my application. I've also worked for two years as a medical assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital, which I believe is valuable experience, but I'm unsure if it's enough to make up for my earlier struggles.

Has anyone here navigated a similar situation with re-enrollment or applying to nursing programs with a lower GPA but stronger recent performance? How did you demonstrate your readiness and commitment to nursing? Any tips on making a compelling personal statement, or advice for tackling the TEAS exam would be greatly appreciated.

Also, applications are due around April 1st for fall enrollment. Will I have enough time to study for and take the TEAS exam?

Thank you so much for your help!
