sedation during neonatal lazer eye surgery

We use Fentanyl and Versed. We give a dose of Fentanyl about 15 minutes before the procedure and then a dose of versed as the procedure starts. We can give an additional Fentanyl and Versed if needed. And always have reversals right on hand!

Are all your patients reintubated if they are not already? Or do you put them on a nasal canula? Thanks for the info:nurse:

Not all of them are intubated and we don't put them on a nasal cannula unless they drop their sats with the sedation. We do have some kids that we will electively intubate if they need extensive laser and need to be sedated longer than usual or if we know it takes a lot to put them out, we will sedate, intubate and resedate so that they are snowed. We will reverse if they are out of it for more than 4 hours so that we can get them back off the vent. We also give tylenol for 24 hours after (if their liver enzymes are ok) since adults that have laser surgery do report a headache after, I had surgery on one of my retinas and I can tell you I had a big ole headache after!
