St. Charles Community College (SCC)

St. Charles Community College (SCC) is a public community college, established in 1986. Graduates are awarded an ASN and are eligible to apply for the NCLEX licensing examination and state licensure.

Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN)

Before applying to the ASN program, students are encouraged to attend an open house at the SCC Nursing and Allied Health campus in Dardenne Prairie.

Application Requirements (not all-inclusive)

Step 1 - Assessment

• Complete assessment test and/or submit official transcripts for college-level English, math courses passed with a grade of "C" or better
• Official transcripts on file and submit a transcript evaluation form prior to application
• Successfully complete developmental coursework required or equivalent English as a Second Language required courses

Step 2 - Grade Point Average (GPA)

• Recent high school graduates within five years may present official high school transcripts with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above. GPAs for high school students with 12 or more dual credit hours will be based solely on college-level coursework
• Students with 12 hours of college-level credit (non-developmental) coursework must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above
• College credits supersede high school GPA

Step 3 - American College Test (ACT)

The ACT score requirement is based on current GPA and must have been taken within five years from program start.

The ACT will be waived for students who meet the following criteria:

• Bachelor's Degree minimum GPA 3.0
• Associate's Degree minimum GPA 3.0
• Completed 45+ transferable college-level credit hours, 30 in general education courses; minimum GPA 3.0

Step 4 - Health Education Systems Inc. (HESI) A2 Exam

Students must complete the HESI A2 and earn a minimum of 75% on each of the following academic subject areas: reading comprehension, vocabulary, math, and anatomy and physiology.

Admission to the ASN program is dependent on the results from the mandatory drug screen and criminal background check. Students who test positive on the drug screen will be denied admission for the current year. Students may be denied entry into the program based on criminal background results.

Students are ranked for admission by a point system correlating to their HESI A2 scores, GPAs, ACTs (if applicable), and Anatomy & Physiology I grades.

Bridge to the Associate Degree Nursing Program

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) may "bridge" into the St. Charles Community College associate's program by successfully completing the admission requirements as outlined below.

Admission to the Bridge program will be based on a comprehensive review of applicant materials (GPA, courses completed, etc.). The Bridge Admission Committee will review applicant materials and communicate final decisions in December (before the first semester of the Bridge program). Students must meet with a career-technical counselor to begin the application process. All criteria must be completed in order to apply for the Bridge program. At the time of application, students will be placed in an applicant pool.

Step 2 - Prerequisite Courses

Students must complete Chemistry, anatomy, and physiology I, psychology, and English composition I prior to entering the Bridge program. Students enrolled in one or more of these courses in the fall prior to the Bridge program start must show proof of their enrollment. Admission to the program will be contingent on final grade/GPA for the course(s).

Step 3 - Grade Point Average (GPA)

Students with 12 hours of college-level credit (non-developmental) coursework must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above. College credits supersede highschool GPA. GPA is considered in the admission process.

Step 4 - Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License

Applicants must have a current undisciplined LPN license from the state of Missouri, including IV certification.

Applicants should have 2 years of clinical experience within the last 3 years, or graduated from an LPN program and have worked since graduation.

Admission to the Bridge program is dependent on the results from the mandatory drug screening and criminal background check. A positive drug screen will result in denied admission for the current year. Students may be denied entry into the program based on criminal background results.

Eligible students will be notified of admission status upon final ranking at the close of each semester. Students currently enrolled in the Practical Nursing program are eligible to apply for the Bridge program after successfully passing the LPN National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and receiving his or her state LPN license number.

Accreditation and Approval

St. Charles Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

The Nursing programs are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

The Associate of Science in Nursing degree program is fully approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
