In 1946, Erie Community College (ECC) was founded as a public community college as part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. The college has grown from a small two year technical institute to a three-campus college and is now the second largest college in Western New York.

Associate of Applied Science (AAS) – Registered Nurse

The Associate of Applied Science program curriculum at Erie Community College include nursing and general education courses that incorporate lab and lecture components. The courses in the nursing program focus on many areas including medical/surgical, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, and psychiatric nursing. The nursing curriculum is designed to be completed in two years.

ECC does not have a waiting list.

After graduation, students are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN and become licensed in his or her state as an RN.

The associate of applied science program is offered at the City (Buffalo) and North (Williamsville) campuses.

Admissions Requirements (not all inclusive)

  1. High school graduate or High School Equivalency
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.0 at all undergraduate colleges attended within the last five years (5)
  3. Required sciences with minimum grade of "C" within the last five years
  4. Nursing Admission Assessment Test (A2 exam)
  5. ECC English Placement Test at the EN110 level or above with minimum grade of "C"
  6. Minimum grade of "C" in all developmental, pre-requisite, co-requisite and required nursing courses
  7. It is strongly recommended students meet with health science counselor as admission into the program is based on academic qualifications and space availability
  8. North Campus admits students for days and evenings in September; application deadline date, February 15; City Campus admits students for days only in January, admission deadline date, September 15
  9. For LPNs, current New York State LPN license required to take NU 120; Medical Military personnel, transcripts will be individually evaluated for eligibility; Life Experience Assessment Program credit completed before the start of second Nursing semester

Additional Requirements and Fees (not all inclusive)

  • Individual malpractice insurance, nursing evaluation fees.
  • A physical examination is required annually to ensure that the student is capable of completing the clinical requirements. An incomplete or unacceptable physical exam may result in dismissal from the program
  • Students entering Nursing are strongly recommended to receive immunization against Hepatitis B.
  • Nursing students must be compliant with the college immunization requirements. The college reserves the right to deny progression in the Nursing Program when students have incomplete or unacceptable physical exam reports.
  • Students are responsible for providing transportation to off-campus clinical/community agencies utilized for clinical nursing laboratory courses.
  • Students are responsible to meet all requirements and/or costs associated with clinical agencies.
  • Failure to meet requirements from clinical facilities may preclude completion of the nursing program.

A2 Content Exams

The content exam called the Health Education Services Inc. (HESI) is required for every applicant. The admission Assessment Exam (A2) measures competencies in Math, English (Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and Grammar) and Anatomy & Physiology.

If the applicant does not pass with a 75% or greater on each section of the test, the applicant will have one opportunity to retake the Nursing entrance exam during a subsequent semester.

Students who have taken the exam within the last 5 years do not have to take it again. Students who are unsuccessful in attaining passing scores that are acceptable for admission may retake the exam only one (1) additional time.
