Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, initially established as the Cabarrus County General Hospital School of Nursing by Louise Harkey in 1942, began as a three-year diploma program to address the need for registered nurses during the Second World War. Over time, the college expanded its curriculum, introducing new programs and adding the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in 2020.

The college's mandate is to cultivate competent, caring nurse professionals through exemplary education and the promotion of lifelong learning. This is achieved by providing students with real-life clinical experience right from the start in their entry-level nursing programs, enhancing their knowledge through the rich experience of their peers in programs for working nurses, and standing out to potential employers through the experience gained from learning at their Atrium Health hospital-based campus.
