San Diego State University vs. CSU Sacramento nursing programs?

Published

Hi guys! I need a little help with choosing schools to transfer to. I applied to both SDSU and CSU Sacramento, and I'm positive I'll get into Sac state and pretty sure I'll get into SDSU. I need help choosing which to go to, however. What is the job market like for new grads for SDSU and CSU sac? I've heard both aren't too great :( Can anyone who's attended either one of these programs tell me about their experience? What were the professors like and how was your overall experience at the nursing program and college? How about afterwards? Thank you!! Again note that I'm a transfer student so I'll be going straight into the nursing program!

SDSU Pros:

-Better weather and location

-More reputable school (harder to get in to, and Sac is notorious for "ripping off" its students)

-Less of a commuter school

-New environment

Sac state pros:

-Cheap cost of living

-Closer to family & friends

-Friend already agreed to be roommate if I attend

-Higher NCLEX pass rates (by about 7% on average)

-2 year program vs. 3 year

While I can't directly say much about either program as I haven't attended either one, I can say that at least for the Sacramento area, having a BSN will at least make you somewhat more competitive than me as I only have a ADN. In particular, you'll be able to apply to UCDMC as most, if not all, of their floors require BSN if you're an external applicant. At present, UCDMC is not an option for me... though I'd like to work there for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the retirement...

Most of the job postings that I've seen in the acute care facilities have "BSN Preferred" or similar language... though ADNs will be hired in to those jobs quite readily.

I don't know what the market's like in the San Diego area, but I imagine that it's just insanely competitive. I have lived in that area for a while (a few years back) and it's very obvious why people want to live there... If I had my pick of jobs anywhere I wanted to go and if I could afford it (key thing) I would move back there. However, I also very much enjoy the Sacramento area and though it's hot sometimes and cold sometimes, I generally find it pleasant and I have the option of changing the climate just by driving 2 hours in any direction.
