I'm new to this forum and I have a couple of questions regarding nursing, I haven't been able to find consistent answers anywhere. First of all, I'm a 19 year old male, I'm a freshman at DePaul University with plans to transfer to UIC next year and enter the pre-nursing program. I wanted to know what is the ration of men to women in this profession, and if it play a major role in the field? Also what should I expect to make coming right out of college? What field of nursing do most men go into?

Last I read it was around 5%, which is up from the traditional 3%. I too am a student nurse and a male one, tooboot. In the military, the ratio, I hear is closer to 50%. I don't know if that's true or not.
I will make 17.40 an hour when I am hired at the hospital where I work now. If I had a BSN, I would make around 18.00 an hour. I will make an additional amount for working a 12 hour shift, but I'm not sure what that is, I think it's like an additional 15% for the four hours past the 8 hour mark. When I get on nights, I think I will be making around 20 an hour.
Men traditionally work ER, ICU, Psych, and military, but I'm going to work on a step down cardiac unit. If I had it my way, I'd work 36 hours on the cardiac unit and then an additional 12 hour shift each week in the ICU somewhere, that's my goal anyway.
And that represents the extent of both my knowledge and ability to BS

Speaking as a UIC grad student, I must say they have a wonderful program. I was a TA for one of the undergrad courses and found that there were a lot of male students, esp. Compared to where I graduated from at NIU where there were none. I could give you more info if you would like just email me at [email protected].
