I am a former resident of the big island and I currently live in Allanta GA with every intention of moving back to the big isle ASAP. My question to you all is I am trying to decided what degree and carreer to have in Hawaii (preferable Kona where I am from) would be and since I know that you all did your research before making your desision on careers in the islands is:
1) I currently have a scholarship that is 100% merit based and will pay 100% of my tuition for any program that I get into and want to pursue.
2) Given the current economic situation EVERYONE is now feeling, should I just let my house go (that is worth A LOT less) then it was when we purchased it 6 years ago or try to stay om at as long as possile amd go to sachool for nursing (choiche #1) ot Teaching (chooice # 2) I know I would love eaither carrer as i am currently a licensed esthetician (skin care facials, which I can also do for a resort on the big isle, hands on or masnagement (spa) as I have a lot of experience in that as well)
3) are there a lot or any "new grad" programs" on the big Island that you know of or is there more of a need on the Big Island for vertified teacjers st this
4) My husbnd and I lived in Konja,HI togerther and want more than anything, to raise our daughter, Liliana, there but we have to get going ASAP if that is our decision,
5)If there are new grad jobs kn Kona...and we want to get out of here ASAP would you recommend getting out of here now and going to school for nursinc and living in Hilo for the 2 years of the program and having my husband find a job and us live in furnished student housing at UHr woulf we have a better chance if i went to the main campus on Oahu (where we really dont want to live )but will if we need to just for the short time unil I get me RN?
5) Or is Teaching more of a need on Kona side,or even more can you tell me wha you think is the most needed licensed jobin the medical field in Kona? (Dental Hygenist for example) I am willing to do whatever ot takes to get back there but really do have a gream of being an RN or secondly a Teacher.
Please let me know your thoughts as they will be great;y appreciated and helpful as we try to return to the islands.
Mahalo,
Christine

From what I hear, the competition for UHM on Oahu is pretty thick. You'd probably have a better chance getting in at UHH, just from a numbers standpoint. It's also way cheaper to live in Hilo than Oahu. I'd apply to thier program and live in the student housing with your family while your husband works... but there aren't too many jobs on the Big Isle right now.
