Rn on Strike

Published

I have a question for all union nurses. Our nurses are on strike it is our tenth day out of the hospital. I was planning on going per-diem before the strike happened but I just never did it. So I am wondering if I go per-diem now and go back to work if that would be considered crossing the picket line? And if it is would you do it? I am pregnant and really can't afford to not work anylonger and there are currently no other per-diem positions in my community due to the 455 striking nurses also looking for work. So my question to all is would you continue to strike or go back to work per-diem and resign from the union? Thank you I am struggling with this desicion!!

Several years ago I was in your situation. I went back to work. It was just the right thing for me to do. Yes I crossed the picket line and in return had to resign from the union. I was glad I did. Most of my coworkers had to find jobs at other places. Some waited so long that they were rehired after the union was eventually voted out. A union can help in some situations. On the other hand, sometimes the union causes more loss then the gains you recieve. I could not live with out benifits and on just 240$ a week. At the time I couln't find extra work for the same reasons you stated. It is an individual decision, you have to do what is right for you and your family. If you go prn now I believe it would be the same as crossing the picket line. I wish you well in your decision.
