RN-second degree or MS

Hello,

I'm 30 years old and I'm going to graduate with a degree in Biomolecular science this May. I started my secondary education later after I came to this country. I have originally planned to apply to medical school but my life priorities have changed and I'd love to apply to a nursing school instead.

I have several options and I'm not sure whether to choose the accelerated RN program for non-nursing graduates (2nd degree) in order to be able to start my nursing career faster or to apply into a program such as BS/MS joint program or Clinical Nurse Leader program.

I'm also getting married this June and we are also thinking about having children soon. I'm not sure if I should jump in and obtain a second BS degree in nursing or choose the longer path: 22 months for CNL or 2.5 BS/MS nursing degree.

For most of the programs I do have almost all the pre-requisites but I still need some time to finish them up. I'm looking into starting the program in fall 2012.

Anyone with a similar story? I would appreciate anyone's input. To me it's important to be able to work as soon as possible. I spent last couple years at school and my "husband in June" is getting a little bit "nervous". He is worried that I will stay in school forever:-)

I have always wanted to work in health care but becoming a nurse wasn't my family's wish. My mom is a nurse but back in my country the pay is terrible and the conditions are not good either. She told me that starting a nursing career and planning a family is going to be stressful and perhaps even disastrous for our marriage. That is the reason why she would rather see me working in the research lab.

Please someone give me an advice or word of encouragement:-)

thank you and good luck to all!!!

Nursing school is very stressful. You will not have time for babies (in my opinion). Spouses also resent the time you will spend studying. Having said that I will say that an accelerated degree is not a bad option. New marriage, new career, Mom not around to help = I recommend school now and babies later. But it is between you and hubby.

Thank you for your respond:-)

I think I could wait with babies for a year or so:-)

I would also hate to go through the school and than trying to get pregnant realizing that I can't have kids:-(

Thank you!
