RN in one state...can I work as something else in another state?

Hey nurses,

I'm a new grad nurse. Been working for about 9 months now in a NJ hospital. I applied for my NY license, but it seems to be taking forever. I submitted everything, they received it but they haven't processed everything yet. They have to verify my education. Apparently they are backlogged so now I have to wait longer. I'm content with my current job, working 7p-7a, and I like the people I work with. The salary is just ok, but it certainly isn't enough for me. It could be better. I don't feel like waiting for my NY license. I know eventually it will come, but I just can't wait. I was thinking while waiting I could get a per diem job as a unit secretary at a NYC hospital or something. Or even a patient care tech (I used to be one before becoming an RN). I need extra cash. My question is...can I still work in a hospital in NYC as a secretary, tech, etc. while I have my RN license here in Jersey?

Hi. Not sure about the legality of your question, that's a question for your BON.

What I can tell you is that it may be a waste of your time to look for, interview and orient at a new job as a unit clerk for example when you may be leaving it very soon. Can you do a little OT at your current position until the NY license comes through? I'm sure it won't take longer than a month and you can apply for NY jobs meanwhile. The whole hiring process can take weeks anyway and then you need allow for time to give notice in NJ, etc.

Good luck!
