RN to NP in the same unit

I've gotten lots of people telling me that if I want to get a good job as an ACNP in an ICU, that I should try to get my ICU experience in the unit I'd like to work in. That way, the docs get to know me and know my capabilities and that's a foot in the door. My question is this, how would nurses in the unit respond to you? Yesterday you're one of them, now you're writing orders and doing ACNP stuff instead of bedside nursing. Anyone ever done it? Was there a lack of respect due to the familiarity? Just curious....

I don't really have a work experience to share with you, but I did do my last clinicals for my ACNP program with a cardiologist who rounds at the hospital where I was employed as an RN. It was a little difficult at first, because everyone wanted to stop me to know what I was doing etc. Then some of the nurses who I worked with and considered to be "friendly" with worked very hard to sabotage me with my preceptor. Thankfully I was thorough and had a very supportive preceptor who wouldnt put up with their crap.

I will say though that the majority of my coworkers were and remain very supportive......Just remember just like with a bucket full of crabs......there are always nurses who will hate to see you advance yourself and try to pull you down with them.
