RN New Grad working in nursing homes

U.S.A. Washington

I will be moving to Bremerton with my spouse in the Navy and I am wondering since a position in a hospital is so difficult, is a nursing home a good option?

There are plenty of nursing homes in the Kitsap area. I have quite a few classmates who are at nursing homes some by choice and some by necessity. Most feel they are getting some experience. Others still want a hospital job.

I graduated in June of 09 and am working at a hospital in Tacoma. The commute sucks but the experience I am getting is priceless. Harrison only hires such a few new RN's each year...there should be another residency interviews starting soon. Keep an eye on their website.

Don't forget to check navy hospital also...being a dependent might get you hired.

Good luck!

As an RN you have opportunity to work your way up the ladder. You will start as a floor nurse passing meds and assessing residents. You will be in a team role where you will be over the C.N.A.'s. You will schedule where they will be working on the floor. You will do more in the nursing home with hands on care then in the hospital. The opportunity lies where you show your motivation to the DNS and the administrator of the nursing home. State you are motivated and looking to move up in the company and would like a higher role. Apply to open positions with in house. You will notice that the pay will be less then the hospitals but negotiate your pay by knowing what the hospitals pay in that area. I am less than two years out of school and have move up to an Assistant Director of Nursing role with Staff Development. I love my new role and It didn't take long to get there. Nursing homes are great places to work.
