Rn to Msn online programs

Specialties NP

Published

Hi, I WAs wondering if anyone could help me out. I am interested in getting my Msn, online of course at an affordable, accredited college. I have a bachelor's degree in another field. I am going crazy with all the different colleges to choose from. I am not sure if I am going to get my Msn, or go forth with Nurse Practitioner with concentration in geriatrics. I am realm really intimidated by being a NP:) has anyone done any of these programs? Is it worth getting Msn, or should I buckle down and go for Np? ANY info is helpful! Thank you!!

NP is also an MSN degree. There are several types of MSN including nurse practitioners, CRNAs, clinical nurse specialists, education, etc. NP is one specialty of MSN degrees. In addition, many of these also offer a doctorate level. Is that what you were referring to? Doctorate of Nursing Practice is an available option which many are pursuing, but is not yet entry level. Per many posts on the forum and articles around the web, there is no set date for the transition to doctorate being entry level. I believe that CRNAs have a set date, but it is still well enough in the future that whichever degree you pursue at this time will still have MSN level entry.

With that in mind, which options are you balancing? Between which degrees and which specialty of NP? Your long term goals are important in choosing an appropriate path. Some of the programs overlap which allows post-master's certificates in NP specialties from other MSN programs. That may be an option if you feel you are not yet ready or not sure of your desire to be an NP. In either case, I suggest basing your decision on your long-term goals, not your intimidation of the requirements or level of difficulty.

Thank you for your response! Yes I do have to buckle down nd think about what I really want to do. I currently work in geriatrics and bayada home health

I love geriatrics, so I think I pretty much have it narrowed down to 2 majors: Clinical nurse specialist in adult/gero, or Adult/gero NP. I don't know if with three small children and working, I would be able yo also fit in clinical time, that is a major factor. If anyone knows anything about the clinical time I would really appreciate it.I believe you have to sit for exams if you are a CNS or NP, so part if me wants to just got for the NP
