I was recently told that if I joined the military now that the 20 year active duty retirement pay has been reduced from 50% to 35%Further, I just read where TraumaRUs posted that retiree healthcare only covers disability connected to service.
I found both of these statements to be shocking. Since healthcare for life and 50% pension are huge selling points for pursuing a military career. Can someone please let me know if these 2 statements are really true.
Im not in the military nor am I prior service. So if I join it will be soon. But it seems the financial security lure just lost some luster.
Thank you kindly.
Neither one is true. Trauma will probably be along to explain her comment, but what she was referring to was getting care at the VAs after retirement. No matter what after retirement you are eligible for Tricare after and care at military treatment facilities. Tricare works like a regular insurance more or less w/ it's own government/military spin on it.
There has bee A LOT of TALK about changing the military retirement system, but no change reducing the benefits have occured. Right now reducing any military benefits would be quick and painful way for any politician to retire.
