Nurses Career Support

Published

I was hired as a new grad at my facility and have been there 2 years.

I'm editing my resume for the first time since being a grad. how much info should I list about my job? I listed the type of care and needs the patients have. do I go into patient/staff ratios too?

should I still be listing the types of clinical rotations that I did in nursing school? do they really care about that now? I feel like it's a waste of space.

No need to go into a lot of detail about the care of the patients unless there are a lot of things that are unusual. However, I would make a few general statements about the type of patients and the major services you provide regularly. I would also include things such as "charge nurse" or "team leader" or "preceptor" experience you may have and any special skill or certifications you want to highlight. Also, include any committees or special projects that you worked on and be prepared to discuss them.

For example: There is no need for you to state that you know how to do vital signs, I&O's etc. That should be obvious from the fact that you are a staff nurse working with the types of patients you work with. However, if you are skilled at IV starts ... or with trach patients ... etc., I would include those things. Those are things not every staff nurse is good at.

Unless there is a special reason to include your student experiences, I would leave them out. You might want to include a couple of things, though, in some circumstances. For example, if you did a special senior-year preceptorship in an area that is the same as the one you are wanting to work on now, I would include that. If you received awards, participated in your student organization, etc., include those things. But there is no need to list your routine clinical rotatations that every student nurse does.
