Hi! I dont know where you are, but here in California, the programs for fall and winter are done receiving applications. I was actually offered a position in one of them and I start in August.
They started the application process in March, so I would think that you better start looking for Spring 2012 programs rather than Fall/Winter.
Yes, this programs do offer opportunities. There is some good advice in here (pages 42-44): https://allnurses.com/california-nurses/californias-2011-new-534552-new.html
Competition is hard!! so in the time you have between now and whenever you application process start, I would suggest to get as many certifications as you can, as well as volunteer work. This can be the difference between you and other applicants. The certifications I got where CPR/BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, and STABLE. I also volunteered in 3 different places (for 2 or 3 days, but still counts!)
I got 2 offers from 2 programs. One of them had about 700 applicants for 24 openings, the other one had more than 300 applicants for 15 openings....so you must somehow be able to be a better candidate than 20 other people.
Good luck!
