Published

Anyone work or has worked at Washoe Medical Center? What's it like? Your impression - the good, the bad, and the ugly?

Considering moving to Nevada or Northern California.

Thanks for the info!

I've been working at Washoe since December 2003 and I love it. Of course, the only experience I have with other hospitals in the area is through school clinicals. I love working there so much I have to chosen to stay there after graduation instead of taking a position at the hospital that is 5 minutes from my house (Washoe is 30 minutes from home) and that particular hospital not only pays more, but offers a better shift differential.

I'm happy with my unit (ICU) and love the staff there. The environment is very supportive and the people are great. I enjoy my job immensely (I've been working as an Apprentice Nurse II since June 2004) and am looking forward to being on my own after this June.....dependent upon passing boards, of course!

That being said, yes, it will be tough to purchase a home in this area....and we will have around $110,000 household income. Guess I will be working some overtime...LOL. It stinks that we couldn't buy about 2 years ago....the house prices were MUCH more affordable then. A house that goes for around $350,000 now was around $180,000 then. But I was just entering nursing school and that just was not an option at the time.

Washoe has been very good to me and I enjoy working for them. Had I more experience with different facilities, I might think differently. I have heard from some travelers that they didn't think much of it, but then again, other travelers loved it so much, they ended up staying a year (Washoe will extend certain travelers contracts past the 6 month deadline if they want them to stay bad enough....especially if they're trauma-certified).
