Relocation to Tampa FL next year

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I will be relocating to Tampa in about a year due to my Boyfriend transferring from the Art institute of Washington to the Art Institute in Tampa. Since I have never been to Tampa I don't know what kind of colleges and Nursing Programs are around the area. I want to be a RN but if I need to find a college that is affordable. I am also considering becoming an LPN and later going back and getting my RN, are there any LPN schools near or around Tampa? What is the cost of living like in Tampa? Are one bedroom apartments affordable for 2 people with low income? Thanks...

Amber

I moved here sight unseen December of 05 due to DH's job transfer. We rent a 2 bedroom for under $1000/mo, and 1 br's in my area run close to $700. If you're willing to commute from outside the city or live in other neighborhooods (I'm in S Tampa) you may be able to get a little cheaper, but COL is generally pretty high here. I attend USF's nursing program (BSN) and tuition for a FL RESIDENT is really inexpensive (

Hey thanks for your reply :). I had no idea the cost of living in Florida was so high. Compared to where I live near Washington DC any apartment for under $1000 a month sounds good to me. The monthly rent for a studio apartment here is about $1200-$1400. All we are looking for is a Studio apartment, maybe a one bedroom if the rent is cheap enough until my boyfriend/fiance graduates from the art institute. I was thinking about taking a few courses part-time at HCC, probably my maths and English's and maybe the pre-requisites at least until I can apply as a resident of Florida. USF is really about $2,000 a semester for a Resident of Florida? Since Im not planning on applying to a Nursing School for another 2-3 years that would sound perfect. Is the competition to get into USF's Nursing program very competitive?

USF is extremely competitive. They only look at overall GPA when making admissions decisions, and you'll probably need a minimum of a 3.5, maybe higher for regular upper division. I'm in accelerated, and that's all we needed. They get 11 applicants for every spot, so you need to have very good grades. And yes, FL's resident tuition is I think 49/50 states. It means we have big classes, but all my professors so far are really good. My bill for fall (14 credits) is just over $1700. Books will be another 3-5, and then I still need a clinical uniform. Make sure that if you want residency, go get a new driver's license ASAP when you move here and register to vote - we moved Dec 29, and I didn't get my license until January - this caused a lot of headache when I needed to get resident status to pay my bill for spring semester this year. Good luck, and feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.
