ello all! i passed my nursing boards last year june 2009 and have been working as an RN since sept. 2009. i got employed in a sub acute nursing facility and i have learned alot from them. proud to say i have never been written up for anything, no complaints from patients and i loved my shift team that i worked with. sounds like the perfect job right? but no it is far from perfect. while i was working, alot of the staff members either dropped like flies and went away or turned to per diem. after like 6 months of working with them, i was even considered as one of the old nurses working there because they just could not maintain their staff. 10 months i worked there, there has already been a change in the DON, ADON and executive director. that kind of facility is notorious for taking acute patients just for the money while the nurses struggle on the floor trying to make ends meet during the shift. and it has been said many times too, your license feels like its on the line when you work here. but i stuck around and made most of the situation and in the long run, i was able to learn alot and build up my confidence in this field. around june i started sending my resume to other places and luckily i was offered a 40 hour position in a rehab hospital. it is a traumatic brain injury unit which i know i will get alot of acute care experience there. the ratio is 6 patients and the patients usually get discharged within 10 - 16 days. the rehab there is intense and does not always deal with geriatrics. the orientation is 2 weeks sit down class and 8 - 10 weeks with my preceptor on the floor, not bad at all, i feel like i wont be thrown in the fire right away.
the second offer is at a med surg unit at a community hospital, very reputable name. but the offer is only per diem and no benefits. i also went to another interview to a sub acute unit which is run by a great company which is offering me full time but i asked for only 24 hours because i need benefits and i explained i have a per diem jb. now i am stuck in between which one to choose from . please help!
