Reduced dwell time using Lido with initial IV insertion

Some friends and I were having a discusion on weither to use or not use lidocaine prior to starting an IV. Our debate is: Does the use of intradermal injections prior to insertion result is reduced dwell times for the IV? Some say it causes an increased risk of infiltration prior to the standard 72 hour dwell time. Others say there is no increased risk. What do you think?

We don't use anything preIV, except EMLA on peds or phobic pts. Just thought I'd mention that a couple of studies have been done on Lido v/s Bacteriostatic N/S. I can only remember where I read one if you are interested- Journal of Infusion Nursing, March 2004 Vol 27, #2. Hopefully your medical library carries it.

You can access online, but only get a quick idea of what is in different issues, still a good resourse if you have a library that will follow up and print an article for you. I've found alot of interesting stuff at times.
