Equipped with enormous eyes, oversized eardrums and silent wings, he is a superbly engineered nocturnal hunter. he is also one of the most benefiical birds in the air around us. my car broke down in the gloom of a virginia swamp one night a few years ago. I took out my red warning flashlight and waited for help to arrive. Then, remembering that most night creatures are practically insensitive to red light, I played the flashlight through the deep forest. In reduced mist I saw a wonder world of hopping, crawling, running life. Then, suddenly, an instant after my light had flicked past a rabbit, I felt an eerie draft of air - and a great horned owl had seized the unsuspecting animal! I had not heard a sound as the owl went into its power dize. With grim precision, it had captured prey I could not have seen without my light.
1. Which is a statement of main idea for this paragraph/
a. Rabbits are prey of the owl.
B. Most night creatures are practically insensitive to red light.
c. A great horned own can accurately power dive in the dark.
D. human eyes cannot see in the dark as well as some animals do.
My question is, why is the correct answer D!? D seems like just a detail of the paragraph?!

I would say the correct answer is D because it is the most all encompassing item.
A, B, and C are all specific things the narrator saw, and s/he he only was able to see them via the use of the lantern and don't relate to the all encompassing theme.
The majority of the narrative passage describes things s/he would not have normally seen in the dark because humans are normally incapable of seeing them with our vision. The animals were all able to function for example the owl could precision dive in the dark. Humans, on the other hand are rendered practically blind without the aid of some sort of light in the dark. With the lantern the narrator was allowed visual access to an otherwise hidden world.
Hope that helped-- I often have trouble attempting to verbalize why something is right so hopefully I helped and didn't confuse you more. Have fun with the NET studying
