Hi all, I'm a nurse from Texas that is moving to San Diego in August, so I'm completely unfamiliar with the area and hospital systems. I was looking at a map and saw that Sharp Mary Birch Women's and Rady Children's hospital are really close together - is there a partnership between the two hospitals, or are they completely separate?
I am a NICU nurse and I'm trying to join a hospital where I have the opportunity for really great learning experiences. Thanks!

They have same location but are different hospitals. Rady focusing exclusively to pediatric healthcare and Sharp Mary Birch caring for women and newborns.
Rady Childrens has level 4 NICU, Sharp level 3 NICU.
Thank you!
One more question, where do the NICI babies that transfer to Rady's come from?
Also, if you had the chance to choose where to work in terms of employee satisfaction, would you choose Sharp Mary Birch, Rady's or UCSD?

Well, I have friends who work at all three and all of them absolutely love it and only have great things to say. I think it really depends on what you're looking for...Rady Children's is probably most comparable to what Texas Children's is like; it's a very good children's hospital that ranks high in orthopedics (#2), endocrine (#15), and neuro (#19) when compared to all children's hospitals in the nation according to US News. Sharp is an adult hospital that has a Level II trauma center and many ICU specialties.
UCSD is actually the only medical center in the SD area that has both a regional NICU and L&D service within the same facility. I've heard great things about UCSD!
UCSD is a teaching hospital, so lots of resources available. Rady is the only level 4 NICU in So Cal, so you'll see lots of different cases, a chance to expand the skills since all other hospitals in the area transfer the critical cases (mostly cardiac related) there. Sharp Mary Birch expanded recently- 84 beds in the NICU.
All of them are very good. It depends what you are looking for in terms of experience.
BTW, USCD NICU is planning to move to La Jolla in October. So, there will be lots of changes. They've been hiring more than usual.

Radys and ucsd has a very strong relationship. The attendings and anesthesiologists, specifically in the burn center, cross cover at Radys as well. We have been assisted by their teams (ID, renal etc) quite a bit as our population includes both peds and adults.
