"Generic" Masters

Published

I've will be graduating with my BSN (adn-bsn) and almost 2 years exp. staff nurse on a med-surg unit.

I don't know what direction to take but would like to continue with my education and aquire a masters degree.

I like the working with people and I find medicine interesting but I know nursing takes a toll on the body physically and am looking at the long term goal of retirement.

My question is which masters degree would allow for the most movement within the nursing profession. I could see myself working as case management, management/supervisor, possibly education.

I know people also say to wait but at 42 y/o I would rather continue with my education while I'm still motivated. I like working with people but would also like the option of one day obtaining a "desk job" when my body can't take the floors any longer. Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Have you looked into clinical nurse leader programs? It's a relatively new program, but it would be a good stepping off point for any of the areas you mentioned. There is also a certifying exam that's being offered now, too, so you'd have a credential along with the degree. I have had a couple instructors who got their masters as CNLs and I've heard of other graduates of my program getting into other areas such as management.
