Questions re: Clinicals

Published

Does anyone know how the clinicals are set up at Clayton State University, Georgia State or Mercer? Like are the clinicals 12-hour or 6-hour shifts. how many days are the 12-or 6 hour shifts and what times. I am trying to get an idea what to expect because I want to plan early because I have small children? Any advice would be great How did any parents with small children handling making sure children was situated and going to a 6:00 am clinical?

Thanks

In most schools, whether you do 2 six-hour shifts or 1 twelve-hour shift, they usually start really early ... 6:30 or 7 am. This is so you have an opportunity to take report, do morning meds/assessments, etc. Lots of students in my class had small children. They either arranged to have family members watch them, or found a day care center near the hospital that opened early enough to drop them off. It was a challenge but they managed to make it work.

I am a Clayton State BSN student. During my first semester, the clinicals were usually 2-6 hr days (Tue/Wed), but I think most courses have shifted to 1-12hr day (either a Tues, Wed, or Sat). A few courses offered a 12-hr clinical day on Saturday as opposed to our usual clinical days which are Monday and Tuesday. I think many of the parents of small children found that to be helpful. I know some people in the program have located reliable baby sitters and they use some of their student loan money to pay the sitter on the days they have class or clinicals.

Thanks Everyone for your response. ;)

Adonalovable,

Is it required that you have to do 2 or more 12 hour shifts in a week. How do you like Clayton State University? I just had a interview last week and they said that I should know something by next week. The advisor and the faculty member that interviewed me said that everthing looked great. I am trying to get feel of what to expect so I can decide between clayton, mercer and gsu. So any advice you or anyone else would be great. Thanks Again!!!!

I would also love to know more information about current Clayton State clinicals. Where are they usually at?

Ga State start as one 8 hr for basic skills and assessment if I remember correctly. They you move in to two 8 hour clinicals a week during psych and medsurg (if you have those in the regular semester. Summer semseters do 12 hr shifts). Third semester goes to 12 hr shifts. The last semester was an 8hr shift for community then whatever you schedule for your senior practicum. The days of the week were something like Thurs or Fri for semester 1. During semester two you might get Sat/Sun, Tue/Wed, or I think Tue/Thurs? dont quote me on those. Third semester was similar to second. and again the last semester is it's own beast. If you did the ACE program and had clinicals in the summer they were almost all on weekends. I think there was one group for each class that had clinicals during the week during the summer.
