Questions about Air Force HPSP as a new NP

Published

Hey everyone!

I am going to be graduating from my MSN program this May to be a WHNP for the Air Force. I am currently an HPSP student. I am completely new to the Air Force and military life so was wondering what the whole transition process will look like after graduating. I have yet to attend COT. I was wondering specifically about the certification and training process as a new grad NP. Does the military give you time to get certified in your specialty before starting your active assignment? How long does that process take? What about Prescriptive authority? Is that state dependent or does the Air Force have its own protocol on prescriptive authority? What sort of time frame am I looking at from graduation to going to COT to then starting my first assignment? What does the training program look like as a new NP? How long is does the training usually take before you are independently practicing?

Thanks in advance for any and all input! :)
