Questions abt Itt-tech, macomb & accreditations

Published

I have a lil dilemma here.

So last fall, Itt-tech in Canton, MI started up a RN program, and because of all the crazy competitiveness and waitlistings of nursing schools in michigan, I had decided to take their Hesi exam to see if I could secure a spot for this fall's cohort. I called back last week to see if I should retake the Hesi for a more competitive score, and one of the nursing staff assured me that my scores were good enough to be one of the top 30 for this September's start (even though they won't start ranking until 1st week of July, she already told me that I would make the cut). I was pretty much relieved and thrilled that I had actually made it into a nursing program. But as I was doing research on nursing jobs and schools, I became more worried and disenchanted about Itt's program. So now I'm stuck at a crossroad as to what I should do.

From what I understand, Itt tech's nursing program is approved by the MI BON, however, it is not accredited by the NLNAC. This non-accreditation status worries me a lot because as I was looking up nursing jobs across the country, it seemed like MOST of the employers were seeking nurses who've graduated from accredited nursing programs only (and preferably BSN graduates but I planned on bridging over later). I planned on moving out of state to work and I just don't want to find myself being severely limited to employment opportunities later on because I went to a non-accredited school, and I guess that will be the case if I do decide to attend ITT. Even Sparrow Hospital in Lansing MI will only hire nurses from accredited institutions as stated on their website, so I can only imagine what other prestigious hospitals such as Beaumont will do. I was also pretty surprised to find out that other well known community colleges such as Schoolcraft and WCCCD were not accredited by the NLNAC either. So my question is, to those who have graduated from Schoolcraft or WCCCD or other non-accredited nursing programs, was it easy to find jobs after graduation, and was the accreditation thing a big hinder to you for employment opportunities, or the places that you've looked, were they really picky about your nursing educational background?

I also learned that this one ITT-tech campus in Indiana is currently a candidate for NLNAC accreditation and they won't know their status until they graduate their first nursing class. That's great news, but my question is..if they do get NLNAC accreditation, will that apply to other ITT-tech campuses across the country as well, or will it apply that one particular campus only?

As of right now, I'm currently on the alternates list at Macomb. I read in some other Macomb thread that they've already moved 13 alternates into the program. Since I'm #22 on the alternates list, now I'm only 10 spots away from admittance. They told us at the meeting that last year, they took in about 34-35 alternates into the program, and if that figure stays true, I'll probably have a great chance of being admitted this year, but then again, who knows how it's going to turn out this year. I'm still hoping/praying that I'll get a spot, and if i do, i'm forsure going to macomb, but i don't know how likely the chances are for more alternates to move up. do any prior macomb students have any experience with this..being this numbered alternate and getting in? And I really don't want to miss out on this opportunity with ITT-tech either...because what if i don't get into macomb. so i'm torn as to what i should do. the worst case scenario is, i passed up on ITT, don't get into Macomb this year, and will have to tediously wait another year for Macomb, and i really do not want to wait another year. Well, any advice, comments, or suggestions will be appreciated. thanks.
