Question about Samuel Merritt App.

I was looking at the Samuel Merritt college website and I saw this:

"GPA: We are looking for a student with an academic record that clearly indicates their ability to be successful in graduate school. The average GPA for entering students is about 3.5, although we will look carefully at late trends for those who appeared "less than focused" during early years of college. Basic science grades are an important indicator of academic ability"

Hmm...what does "'less than focused' during early years of college" mean? I take that statement to mean that someone who graduated their ADN nursing program with a GPA of 3.0 or so, and then their BSN program with a 3.5 or above, someone who basically improved academically, will be rejected just because they were "less than focused" their freshman year of college.

Yuck. (I failed a math class before I started nursing school).

Hmm...what does "'less than focused' during early years of college" mean? It means just the opposite of what your take on the statment was.

There are academic policies that allow students to have a F grade or D grade off their official record if you retake the math class. A lot of people don't know that. Grades can be petitioned and it will no longer be calculated in your GPA. Re: website statement, if you do poorly in the beggining and improve academically later, they will be mindfull of this. In addition, the key is to have at least a 3.0 to qualify for an interview, that's the minimum cummulative GPA. They will additionally look at the the last 60 units and science grades. (This pertains to Samuel Merritt).
