Question about pre-reqs....

Published

I am trying to finish my pre-reqs by this time next year so I can apply for the Fall 09 ADN program. The last semester I am going to have to take Physiology, Pharmacology and Intro to Microbiology. Do you think it will be to hard to take all three in one semester? Honest opinions please..

Thanks,

sc

I took Physio and Micro together, and it was a handful. But adding Pharm as well? I hope you have nothing else going on (work, life, etc) because you'll have to ignore them for the duration.

Also, bear in mind that more and more programs are becoming grade competitive, instead of lottery. So you can't risk getting a poor grade.

Good Luck

Well, would I be in the same boat if I took Phyisology, Intro to Micro and Anatomy together and then take Pharm in the summer? It would be like taking A&P1 and A&P2 at the same time. Our school just breaks it up like that.

Do you think online courses are easier than classes regarding pre-reqs?

Some online classes are better, simply because you avoid the commute, and the testing is online. Also, some courses are organized/managed by whichever publisher supplies the course textbook. So there are online notes and resources.

I took Pharm online this past summer (through Yuba College), and it was tough. But well organized and thorough. There are special challenges with an online course. Sometimes you need to pay for exam proctoring, and office hours can be a problem.

If you are well disciplined, you can succeed in an online course. But time management and discipline are key.

Absolutely it will be hard. I, too, took physiology and microbiology together (along with statistics). If you are a good student, you have a solid science background (chemistry and introductory biology), and you have NOTHING else to distract you, you can do it and be successful. Be very, very careful, though. My guess would be that most people would not be successful trying such an ambitious load.

Keep in mind that physiology and microbiology are both lab courses and therefore suck up more time than you might expect.

I think this would be a little more manageable because there is at least overlap between anatomy and physiology (I also took them as separate classes). Some people in my physiology class were taking them simultaneously and some were taking physiology without having had anatomy. Some of those folks struggled in physiology because they didn't have the basics of anatomy. If, however, you have taken (and did well) basic biology and perhaps zoology, you'll probably be OK.

You're still going to have to devote yourself to your studies (class and study) something on the order of 60-80 hours per week. You may get by with less but I wouldn't count on it.

Also be aware that individual instructors will greatly affect the time that you have to put into their class in order to succeed.

Thanks everyone who responded!!
