Question on Medicare billing

This is a billing question. If Medicare runs a social security number of a patient that is in the hospital for treatment, and they find that a personal injury lawsuit has been filed, does Medicare refuse to pay the bills, demanding that the bills be paid by the offenders insurance company or other party?

0r does Medicare just place a lien on the settlement? I have heard both ways and would like some concrete info on the subject Has anyone run across this? Will Medicare pay the bills during the course of a personal injury lawsuit? I am not talking about the Medicare set aside after negotiations are over , but during the course, if they find out a suit has been filed. thanks
