Question about Math prerequisite. Welcoming all insight!

Published

Hello everybody!! I enrolled for Spring 2012 and the prerequisite is Alg/Geo I.

However, on my placement exam, I placed into Alg/Geo II.

So, obviously I'm not going to mess around my schedule until I have an answer from the counselor, but until she contacts me back, I'd like to know your insight.

Do you think

A) I will still have to take Alg/Geo I since that is the prerequisite?

B) I will take Alg/Geo II since that is what I placed into, or

C) I will not need to take a math because Alg/Geo I is all that is required & since I placed higher it shows I am competent with my math skills.

Thanks so much everyone!!!:redbeathe

I'm pretty sure the answer is C. If you've placed higher, then obviously you demonstrated an understanding for the lower course, even if it's a pre-req. You shouldn't have to take something that you have already mastered.

Good luck & congrats for placing higher! =)

Thanks & I really hope that is what the counselor will tell me because then I can drop that (its a whole 5 cr hr!!) & i can take Freshman Rhet&Comp & Intro to Psych instead, bc those two classes together equal 6 hours so it would be perfect!

I think C is the answer too. However, I don't know if this automatically gives you credit for that Alg/Geo I or if you need an extra credit-by-examination test. That I would ask to your advisor :)

I agree with DFW gal. While you may not have to take Alg/GeoI since you placed in to Alg/GeoII, you may still need to have a certain number of math credits for your program.

I would ask a nursing program admission counselor about the specific math requirement for your prospective program before assuming that you don't need a math class.

For example, when I first began college, I placed into Calculus I. The nursing program requires College Algebra, a course that is a pre-requisite for Calc I. The nursing school will accept my Calculus credits, but I still need to have 4 math credits at or above the College Algebra level.

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks, that does make sense but for the Associate Degree, all I need is the pre-req. dont have to take any other math the whole program.
