Hi, I am a second year nursing student in an ADN program. I was very disappointed when I found that the program only offered six weeks of study in psychiatric nursing.I want to work in psych as soon as I graduate. I was wondering if hospitals/clinics usually hire new grads. I would also like to know if there are any Christian mental health facilities out there. Any advice from psychiatric nurses would be greatly appreciated.

Can't speak for the States jfinn but if you want to come and live in New Zealand you have an excellent chance. Nursing shortages are chronic and we've always taken new graduates in the psych field here. Good luck - hope you find what you want.

I read your post with interest. Here in Wyoming the psych curriculum has been "integrated" throughout the courses. This is true in the ADN as well as BSN level. While not my preference, it is reality. I work at an inpatient, freestanding psych facility that regularly hires new grad. ADN nurses for psych. We do that out of necessity and also because we have had good luck with many (not so good with some ... I believe if you have the interest and determination you can do a great job. Takes a great committment to ongoing education on your part. If you are interested in practicing in the Wild West - email me and I will get you more information. Donna

OH. YEAH! MANY MENTAL HEALTH HOSPITALS HIRE NEW GRADS. THATS WERE I BEGAN. I STARTED AT THE HOSPITAL THAT I DID MY PSYCH. ROTATION IN. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A CHRISTIAN MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY. YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OUT A OUT PATIENT UNIT IF YOU NEED THE RELIGION. 12 STEP PROGRAMS ARE HEAVY ON RELIGION.

I too am a senior nursing student who is interested in psychiatric nursing as well as working in a Christian facility. I know you posted a while ago, but I figured Id pass this information on to you. There is a facility in West Michigan called Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services. The number is 616-455-4290. Also you may try looking in Texas. Im sure that Ive heard some adverts for such services on Christian radio stations here. If I find out anymore info, Ill pass it along to you.
Good luck and if you get the time let me know how your pursuit for a psych nursing position turned out!

JFinn,
Hi, I am a newly grad-nurse. There are numerous Christian Psychiatric in-patient facilities around. I got hired at a psychiatric inpatient hospital after doing my time in telemetry. Many places do hire new nursing graduates, you just need to look around. The facility I work for is a branch off of St. Helena Hospital. It's called California Specialty Hospital and many places are so short on RNs that they will consider taking you under their wings. Just apply and give it a try. good luck Audrey RN,BSN.
