Psych Nurse Seeking Guidance

Published

Specializes in Psych.

Hi yall,

I am a 36 year male old RN in Florida. I use to work in insurance and three years ago I moved from Colorado to Florida for a fresh start and to become an RN. I had my own bouts with anxiety and depression and psych has always appealed to me. I also found myself to struggle with the hands on stuff in nursing school a la IVs, drawing blood, or catheters. I get really nervous about hurting the patient and start to doubt myself. I went straight into Psych out of school and while I don't hate it, I just feel like I can do more. After passing meds and doing my assessments its a lot of charting and I find it difficult to find meaning/like I am making a difference in someone's life. Somedays are super busy/when patients require emergency meds and such, but I would be lying to myself if I said I totally love it.  I am in the infancy stages of looking into a new field. The only challenge I face is I have zero skills like drawing blood or stuff like that. I was thinking about the OR and was thinking of taking a phlebotomy class to overcome my fears. Any advice on potential options or career guidance would be awesome!
