Psych Consult Liaison work

Published

Hello Everyone,

I started work as a CNC Psych Consult/Liasion Nurse about 6/12 ago and am interested in networking with anyone doing similar work. I know we give diferent title's to jobs all over the world, so I'll explain what I do, as thats easier than a job title.

I basically work on an pager, if there is a presentation in the Emergency Department that is felt (after triage) to be MH related then I am called to do a further assesment, and then to either refer to a psychiatrist or offer advice to the ED Dr's re: treatment or services available etc. The second part of my role is with the main hospital where I carry out a similar function as above but for clients who have been admitted for physical conditions primarily.

I am also expected to carry out education sessions for non-MH staff on assessment/triage skills.

I know there are similar roles and positions out there, is anyone interested in networking and trying to share resources etc.

regards StuPer :)

Hi. I am interviewing for a position as a psych-consult liansion nurse (advanced practice- cns) at a large metro teaching hospital. i would like to keep in touch and exchange info with you, esp. if i get the position.

Thanks, Susan (my actual name is not liandra)

I am interested in talking with you. I would like to get more information regarding your specific job function and pay. I currently work in a ER that has a PSYCH RN TEAM to handle all the business separate from the other patients. It is a challenge and I have done this for years.

Hi. I haven't started the job yet, in fact I don't even have it yet; I'm having my second interview tomorrow (with the physicians on the consult service. ) I'm a advanced practice nurse - I have a masters in psychiatric nursing and am a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist through ANCC, and that is required for this position. Searching to prepare myself I found a resource which I will share:

http://www.apm.org/prac-gui/psy39-s8.shtml

which will give you an idea of what this position entails for physicians. I'll find out tomorrow exactly how my role as a CNS will fit in.... I believe this position will mostly be evaluating patients through-out the hospital on the medical units who are reported to have psych or behavioral issues.

The position for the RN's that you are speaking of in the ER may not require advanced practice but it would not hurt to get further psychiatric education if this is an area that you are interested in. I worked for many years as a nurse before I returned to get my MS in psychiatric nursing.

One thing I can tell you is that probably an ICU or ER nurse may be paid more than I will be at this position... Through agencies nurses that work in those specialties are getting 37 to 40 per hour in this area. My base rate will be lower than that but will include benefits. And if I make it on this job, which will be very challenging (it is at a large urban teaching hospital with a large population of indigent clients) I should be able to get higher pay down the road.

Good luck and I hope to hear more about what your situation is and what you plan to do!
