Prospective Nurse at Landstuhl Regional Hospital in Germany

Is it feasible to live in Saarbrucken if you work at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center? I prefer to take the train (I hate driving), but I will drive if this proves to be too time-consuming. After working a 12 hour day, I prefer to sleep in until 4, that leaves me an hour to get ready, and an hour to get myself from Saarbrucken to Landstuhl. Aye. I currently wake up at 5:00, and start riding my bike to the hospital at 6:20...so I arrive 5 minutes before clock-in. It's a very very nice set up and I will miss it.

I noticed during my interview with HR that there is a significant uphill drive from train to the hospital. If I decided to take the train, is there a service available to transport employees from the train to the Medical Center? If there isn't I suppose I could just take my bike, but I don't think that will be feasible in the winter.

I saw your post from over a year ago. I am going through the interview process now for Landstuhl. I have had the interview, they checked my references and now I am waiting again. Any words of wisdom? What happens next?

Where did you end of living? How did you like working at Landstuhl?

It takes time. Be patient. I submitted my application in December of 2010. In February 2011, I received an noreply email telling me that HR had received my resume. In April, I got a phone interview with a head nurse and several staff. In May, they told me that that there was an opening and I would probably be offered a position. In late July, they gave me an offer. Many civilians I've met have had the same experience as me. So if you're feeling anxious and a little blue, just know, it's not you. It's just that they're extremely bureaucratic and inefficient.

So take a deep breath. It will happen eventually and if you feel like too much time is passing, just keep calling, keep emailing, and keep bugging them. Squeaky wheel really does get the oil. I'm living in Saarbruecken now which is about 40 minutes from Landstuhl. It's the nearest "big" city and I am so glad we decided to live here instead of Kaiserslautern/Rammstein/Landstuhl (practically American soil) area. SB has a river, a beautiful park, farmer's markets, nice cafes, a good Thai restaurant, and you can walk or bike anywhere. Kaiserslautern is where most people live (30 minute drive from Landstuhl).

LRMC has a great nurse-pt ratio (think 4:1) most days and it's very rewarding treating our wounded soldiers. : )

Thank you Janesays1 for all your help! It makes me feel more optimistic. A seargent from there called me to obtain more information and left a message on my voicemail stating, "we really like you and want to move forward in the process."

I hope you don't mind if I "bug" you for more information. Did they give you a good offer, or did you have to negotiate that? Did they give allowances for moving, cost of living, housing, etc.?

Thanks again for your encouragement.

I have been living in Germany for over a year now and have not had the good fortune to be offerred a job as yet. I also received a no reply email a while back, but nothing else. I was starting to lose hope. Thank you so much for your post. It really helps. I know the spots are limited, so I suppose only the very best nurses will be hired. I still pray I get my chance. Good luck to all of you. Please keep posting. Thanks again.

Janesays1,

I'm just finishing up my BSN degree in the states and my significant other is moving to Germany within the year for work. I'm looking into civilian nursing at LRMC and I'm desperate to find anyone I can talk to in order to get more information.

I don't even know where to begin to find a job at LRMC - I've been looking on USAjobs, however, most jobs seem to be for army nurses. I'm going to talk to a recruiter in a few weeks. Also, I'm just finishing up my clinical at a VA hospital and talking to anyone and everyone there.

What is the best process to apply for jobs in Landstuhl? Is there a nursing recruiter or HR person I can get in contact with? Do you have any tips for applying for civilian jobs at Landstuhl?

Any help is appreciated.
