  1. yup, i can definitely relate to this! good luck on your upcoming exam!! ours was approx. 300 questions .. no breaks for us .. lol .. ugh ..
  2. I was hired for a very busy medical floor. I also want to do my masters in a few years and feel that this will be a great learning experience and help prepare me for many things. I still do not know what type of specialty area I want to pursue!
  3. i am an "older" (46) may bn graduate and i'm just signing in to allnurses for the first time in a while and just wondered how everyone was doing. have you graduated? is it all you had hoped? i graduated :yelclap: on may 30th, wrote the crne 4 days later and have been working on a medical floor for the past month and a bit in a days/evenings full time permanent position. as expected, it is challenging and we are overworked but i am still liking it. we don't hear about our exam results for another 6.5 weeks .. how ridiculous and nailbiting. the exam could have gone either way for me -- seriously -- but i am resigned to my fate and will write again, if necessary. just as an atypical, shameless brag, i did manage to graduate with greatest distinction, was my nursing class valedictorian (not of all grads and was elected in a class vote so don't get too excited lol) and got a bronze medal for academic standing in my program. :thankya: i almost don't know where to go from here. it feels like i have been a student for so long and now, while nice, it is a bit of an identity crisis!! there is still so much to know and so many directions in which i could go. feel free to message me and catch up and/or just talk!
  4. I also graduate in May and have accepted a full time permanent position on a medical floor on which I did my senior practicum! I am still waiting impatiently for my grad license which should be here any day.
  5. Doing a happy dance!!! Congratulations!! I am graduating May 30th! Whew!
  6. No, I can't say I have ever wanted to marry a doctor -- well, I'm already married -- but I would like to have the money to throw around that some doctors seem to have. Since I have been in nursing school I have met many nice doctors but many more horrible ones. I don't think I could handle the hours; I am spoiled by my non-doctor husband running around doing things for me whenever I need him to. Anyway, I guess it's wherever your heart takes you ...
  7. Me! Me! I am in a 4 year BN program and finally can also say I graduate "NEXT YEAR"!!! Awesome!! Here is one more thread https://allnurses.com/forums/f50/any-class-09ers-out-there-post-here-159948.html that you can drop by if you get a chance! My graduation date is May 30/09 but we are finished in mid April!!!! Yippee!!
  8. Me! Me! I am in a 4 year BN program and finally can also say I graduate "NEXT YEAR"!!! Awesome!! Here is one more thread https://allnurses.com/forums/f50/any-class-09ers-out-there-post-here-159948.html that you can drop by if you get a chance!
  9. While "nursing staff" may refer to several parts of the health care team, the term by itself -- "nurse" -- doesn't. As I keep reading here, I see "support staff" is another way to refer to it and I have heard that before also. Anyway, as many have said, each job is so valuable in the team ... who knows why someone would stretch the truth but maybe the situation pushes someone to feel it it true at the time. Loved nurseby07's campfire story!
  10. That is just plain bizarre!!!
  11. Hi, Malia!!! Great to see you again!! Bleah, you bring up the fact that maybe I should be checking to see if I have homework for the first day of classes on Monday. Ewww!! lol Have fun at the childbirth class tomorrow!
  12. hey, danielle! well, i think you can still fit all that other stuff in but, like mel said about her full-time job, you have to plan for it like you maybe didn't before! i know i need to get better organized this term .. maybe i will get writing up a schedule for my entire life today, not just for school! gl to you in your studies!! when do you start?
  13. Hi, Mel! Nice to see ya! I think it's amazing the people who work full time and go to school .. I know it can be done but I am not sure I am disciplined enough to do both things well! Anyway .... I also am just wide open to where exactly I want to work -- still ... in fact, I am thinking I might not decide until much after I graduate!
  14. Hey, guys! How is everyone doing? I am starting back to school on Jan. 7th after 3 weeks off!! I would be glad to hear how your studies are going! Mine are going well and last term wasn't terribly challenging and busy, although I admit busy enough. It was nice to have a little bit less hectic schedule than last year! Next term I have another gender and lifespan course, clinical, nursing research and some foundations courses ... I'm on vacation and too lazy to look up exactly what! lol
  15. Our facility is (slowwwwly) moving toward this as well and I can't wait until it actually completely takes effect! We computer chart things like BG and wound assessments but still writing in the pt charts. (and personally I like the chart by exception rule, although some of our instructors disagree.) There are still seemingly a LOT of bugs but hopefully they will continue to work it out .................... but it will be a long time I'm afraid! It's certainly not a seamless transition lol!!
  16. At our hospital, the security picture name tags have only first names and the full name is in small letters on the back. It's definitely in the name of security and confidentiality. On the other hand, each individual is at her/his own discretion to provide her/his full last name and I would have no problem doing so (though can't speak for anyone else of course). I have honestly never noticed whether or not the doctors have just their first name on their picture ID but I know the other hospital professionals (specifically, OT, PT, ST, Dieticians) have first name only. I will try to look and see next time I run across one. Actually, speaking of which, our hospital REALLY needs to step up and ensure people are wearing their name tags in a visible place -- many people stick it in their pocket or wear it flipped over. That is the part I don't understand!!
  17. I'm thinking "Licensed Nursing Assistant"? lol I have no idea though ..... It sounds like you handled the situation with grace and patience and that is awesome! I feel I have to bite my tongue at times too. A slightly different situation involves some friends of mine whose daughter-in-law recently graduated as a licensed practical nurse after 15 month's training. I am in a 4-year bachelor of nursing program and EVERY SINGLE TIME they see me, whether I comment on my busy-ness or not, they consistently say "imagine doing the exact same training and courses in 1 year, as opposed to 4" ...... The d-i-l is a fully qualified nurse, in a super-intense course, but the courses could not have all been identical! Oh well, I suppose I just have to be humbled every time I talk to these people and it's kind of funny but still irritating for it to be implied I am inferior each time I see them!! At last conversation, the m-i-l told me the d-i-l wants to get "into medicine" when I asked what specialty area she wanted to get into (after they mentioned it). I'm not exactly sure what that meant -- did she want to work on a medical floor or become a doctor, I dunno ...... But I digress ..... I hope this woman gets her head set straight eventually. That would be really annoying for real! I'm glad you handled it so professionally!! P.S. Maybe the fact that some patients call all the staff "nurse" will either give her fuel for her fire or satisfy her need to feel like a nurse! haha
  18. I graduate in May 2009 at age 46!
  19. LOL that sounds pretty funny! All socks are certainly not created equal. I think I would look long and hard at how your shoes are rubbing on your feet also. GL!
  20. Well, after the summer off, I am feeling kind of the same way about hitting the books and getting on the wards again. Rest assured it will all come back to you -- and still adding to your knowledge base daily -- and reference books are an arm's length away!! Your orientation will help too and get you acclimatized!! GL it sounds awesome! Congrats on your new job!!!
  21. No, this is normal and you are not just a big baby! There is just so much stress and it's good for you to be able to let out a little at a time instead of letting it build and having a major breakdown. Hang in there -- all the new things will start to get more familiar and you will get in your groove!
  22. Hang in there! While it won't necessarily get any easier, you will get used to it and learn a little better what is expected of you. Critical thinking takes practice and you will gradually get better at it. As for your teacher, she may turn out to have a really nice side once you get to know each other! Stress can cloud perspective; I hope you stick in there and give yourself some credit for tackling this program. Put on blinders to other people's grades because that can drive you crazy in a fast hurry and undermine your confidence. Just keep on putting one foot in front of the other and you will go forward.
  23. I agree with this; if you have the desire and resources I think you should go for it and not let your age stop you. I understand the practicalities but I also think you should go with your heart. I am older (44) also as a student and I am halfway through a 4 year Bachelor of Nursing program and have read this thread with interest! Thanks to everyone .. I appreciate all the angles shared.GL with your decision, is58tooold. I look forward to hearing whether or not you have decided to pursue it!
  24. How was your first week of classes???? ETA: Er, YIKES how were your first two weeks?!!
  25. Well, my classes start on Wednesday the 5th!! I'm getting anxious to get back .. I want to get on with it to get through it .. at the same time, I like the constant busyness of school .. but I think I am forgetting how stressful it is .. maybe it gives me something quasi-real to complain about ....... So when does everyone else start (if you haven't said already and even if you have and want to talk about it again lol). TTFN
