When did this trend start??
That's been going on forever. I saw some crazy stuff 30 years ago when watching my aunt graduate. I'm hoping I can come up with something as entertaining for those in the audience to watch. Don't take it too seriously.

Military Spouse! Should I tell them?
As a former recruiter who worked with transitioning military I recommend this. "I've decided to move back to San Diego so I can be closer to my family." They are not allowed to ask about your husband if you never mention him. Protecting that will keep the rest of the questions from being legitimately asked. Good luck in your search.

What gives with the unsupportive spouses?
My wife today is highly supportive. My previous wife received the benefit of a six figure income and a man who would leave early to be home for dinner. I made sure that she could stay home and be a mom IF she wanted to. That income came with a requirement that I be available for clients at off hours and sometimes on weekends. I was accused of getting break all day while she struggled with kids at home. The kids were in elementary school for several years when this accusation came along. She left because it was unfair to her that I worked from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and got a break from the household chores everyday. My only point here is that spouses are often self centered no matter what we do. I have been blessed with someone who loves me for me and understands that we share each other with our obligations at work. I hope that things change for the OP and that support will be the new norm.

Male modesty double standard
OP - Perhaps you could advocate for a policy change to protect Pt rights within your facility. Show us some data that proves there is no need for the protective presence of the officers and that Pt outcomes improve. Perhaps

LSU or charity uniform
For clinicals - white on white with white trim and add a little white to them just to mix things up. At LSU for regular class - closed toe in lab. The polo shirt with SON logo and dark blue or black pants. I only see the charity students in full white.

Getting it in writing
Clear your references before you give them. You choose your references and you don't have to give your current boss as a reference. You don't have to tell your boss anything. Of course they MAY want to hire you if they are checking references. For what it's worth I have never given my current employer as a reference and I think it is wise not to unless the new position is a complete change of career.

Phone interview only?
I've had that happen to two of my candidates in the past. One accepted the offer and seemed to do great for the time we stayed in touch. The other declined the position because they had not seen the facility yet. If you have a concern for the location or the facility then ask for an on site to get a chance to interview them. If it is that far away you obviously will consider relocation. Make sure that the benefits include what you need to have in order to make the move. At minimum ask them for the on site visit so you can make an informed choice.

Need help!!
Add/replace the fluff with quantifiable accomplishments. Some examples of the kinds of things in our profession that are quantifiable are: How many lives saved in an ER role. How many concurrent Pts managed in LTC or recovery ward. Number of hours in surgery as med/surg nurse. These areas may not directly apply to your experience. I hope you get the idea though.

Remember, just because they aren't interviewing anyone else (new) does not mean you don't have competition like someone they already spoke to and are conducting reference checks on at the same time.

Getting it in writing
As a headhunter (previous career) there is something to do differently. 1. Don't tell your manager yet. You don't have a job until they tell you, "we will pay you xxxx to be xxxx. We would like you to start on xxxx." Wait until that point to tell your manager. All of the other rhetoric is just that, rhetoric. 2. Talk to people you want to give as references. Ask them what they will say. Get a neutral third party to call them and conduct a reference check on you to see what they say and make sure you are being represented well. If not, change references without confronting the negative reference. Keep your secrets or you will be burned. This is business and you will need to put on your thick skin and suck it up if you aren't getting the positive reference. 3. Contact a healthcare/nurse recruiter to be represented in a search. Follow their advice, be honest with them, and expect complete candor. Good luck.

If no union in right-to-work state, then what?
Maybe I'm ignorant to how a STRIKE works. Last time I witnessed one. Management had to step in and perform the functions of the striking employees. How would that work in the case of nurses? Would they not have a scope of practice issue? Would the striking nurses not be open to Pt abandonment claims? Educate me.

If no union in right-to-work state, then what?
Because an entire hospital full of nurses walking out and ignoring the care of their patients should be allowed? If you really want a union go find a unionized workplace. I have seen more people lose in the long run with unions than I have ever heard of gaining.

I did not mean to imply that you would do anything less. I'm sorry if I caused you to feel that way.

BOLC June 2014
Your main issue will be to provide the Army with a Family Care Plan. The father will be the domiciliary parent in such case that you are deployed. Presuming of course that you are the domiciliary parent in the judgement. Other than your commitment to the Army to not make your status as a single parent a problem for the Army, they don't care. This was my experience as a divorced father of two girls. Whatever you do moving forward it is important to remember that making sure your daughter has the opportunity for a good relationship with her dad is more important than any pain you feel over this divorce. I only say this because it is often a challenge for me to keep this perspective. Good luck to you and your little girl.

LSU BSN Fall 2014 Semester
No worries. We have a lot of time to work together through this program. I value the friendship we will make and the classmates in the program far more than a few study aids.
